New Studio... New Chapter...

4 years ago, I made the move to a storefront in the Kingston Road Village.  My entire family helped me build the studio into something amazing.  I loved it.  It was worth all the hard work.  Some days I worked 14 hours... but, it did not seem like hard work.  I was building something and I was thriving.  I was working with no budget for marketing, but what I was doing was working.  The ladies that came through the doors loved it and kept coming back... my vision was coming to life.

I spent the next 4 years building a community.  A safe place for moms to bring their kids throughout the day and a place for women of all ages and stages to start their journey of health and fitness in a social, safe and welcoming environment.  I built a lot of friendships and watched a lot of friendships grow in the studio.  Even on the days that I was tired and stressed, as soon as the ladies walked into the studio, it all became easier.  They helped me through the day more than they will ever know.

The fitness world comes in waves... we all know how busy the gyms get in January and by February they are near empty again... then they fill up again in the spring as people realize they are not comfortable hanging out on the beach in their winter bodies... then, they empty out again in the summer.  I cannot really blame anyone for this in Canada... we have 2-3 months of awesome weather each year, if we are lucky... why spend that time indoors at a fitness studio?  Trust me, I get it.  Then there is the fall surge again when the kids go back to school and the parents find some time for themselves again... or when the cottages are locked up for the season and people have their weekends in the city again... which is quickly followed by the mid-November mass-exodus... between work functions and family celebrations, membership drops dramatically from mid-November to the first week of January.  So, no matter how hard I worked and how much family time I gave up, I felt like I was always battling to get people in the studio.  The times when the classes were empty and clients postponed workouts for another day started to drain me.  As much as I understood why the clients were not there, it was getting more and more difficult to justify being away from my family during these times.  The problem was, I could not just lock up and go home... even if no one was there… I needed to be there.  I needed to offer the class to the 1 participant that was still motivated to workout and keep in shape, even if it was the perfect day to sit on a patio and enjoy a drink.  That 1 participant is why I love what I do.  When you find that client that understands all the benefits to staying fit (and is willing to give up an hour on the patio to make it happen), it makes it all worth it.

I had poured my heart and soul into the studio.  I did everything I could to build the client base and keep them happy.  I added classes that were requested.  I brought in instructors that I knew would fit in perfectly with the community I had built.  I did everything in my abilities to make sure Beaches Fitness was a community fitness studio that put the clients first.  I loved it.

So, why did I pack up and move back to my in-home studio?  Well, because as much as I love fitness and working with so many amazing people... I love my family more.  Most of you know that I have 2 growing little ladies.  The fitness world does not work well with a family schedule and I found myself missing out on too many family opportunities.  Before I started to resent the studio for it, I made the difficult decision to close the doors and downsize back to my in-home studio.  It was not an easy decision, but as soon as I made it, I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders.

I have spent the spring focusing on my family and I have not been this happy in a very long time.  I am still working with my personal training clients, but my schedule is more flexible and I have been able to find the work / life balance again.  It is something we should all strive for.

I am very proud of what I built over the past 4 years.  I love the community and the friendships that have grown at 862 Kingston Rd.  I hope all of my ladies have continued with their training and have found a studio that works for them.  I miss them all so much, but this was a change I need to make.  The great thing is I am pretty sure most of them understood that and fully supported my decision.  I was surrounded by so many great women that I consider friends; I am very lucky.

In the very near future, I will be offering daytime classes again.  I will be sending out some more information about that soon, but that is not what this post is about.  This post is about finding a way to pursue your career and / or passions (which, if you are lucky, can be both) while still finding a way to spend quality time with your family.

I am excited for the little things... going camping for 9 days and not worrying if my clients can reach me... no charging my blackberry each night to quickly check emails.  I am excited to be able to take a day off to go to Canada's Wonderland with my husband... and not feeling guilty that the studio will be closed all day because I am being selfish.  I am excited that if a client needs to come a little earlier or later than planned, I can easily make that happen and not worry about 10 other things going on at the studio at the same time.  I am excited for the nights when I do train until 9pm at night, that my girls can come down and see my in the studio and I can still get good night kisses.  All these little things remind me that I made the right choice.

I have also spent a lot of time over the past few months finding myself again.  Anyone that has seen me in the school yard or on the street as has seen some of the changes (mainly the pink and blue hair)... but, there have been a lot of internal changes as well.  I am taking more time for myself.  I am showing my girls that it is important to be selfish sometimes.  It is not a bad thing to put you first sometimes.  My girls come first most of the time... but sometimes, it is nice just to worry about me (while they are happy and safe with my parents at the cottage... not too shabby for them either).  I am exploring my options for the future... school is definitely in my future... finding my passion is definitely in my future... adventure is definitely in my future... so many doors have opened since I closed the doors of the studio.

So, I hope you all understand why I made the decision to close the studio.  I have the opportunity to continue training and working with my clients while spending more time with my family.  It is not easy to balance work and family in our society.  I hope you all take any opportunity you are given to find this balance.  It is worth every minute and every time I get a kiss goodnight, I am reminded of that.

Fall Schedule Has Exploded with Choices!

I am so excited to finally be able to post the new fall schedule!  So many more choices that will work with ANYONE’s schedule and so many wonderful instructors!

The first thing some of the moms out there will notice, is that I have removed the “Mom & Tot” classes… does this mean you can no longer bring your kids to classes?  NO!  All daytime classes will still remain kid-friendly, but they will ALL be open to everyone… not just moms!  This will allow for the classes to grow and progress for participants of all levels!

You will also notice a lot more 30 minute classes on the schedule.  This gives everyone the option of coming in for a quick (but still great) workout, or sticking around for 2 classes and still fitting in an hour of exercise.  This will also allow you to customize your workout… some of you want a full hour of cardio… some of you would rather do 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of core… now, you all get what you want!

Ofelia and I will both be offering these split classes now and I have done my best to partner them up with complimentary classes... for example, on Monday, you can come in for a great class with Mariolga and then follow it up with a core workout for 30 minutes... giving you the best of both worlds and balancing out your workout from head to toe!  The same idea will be offered on Wednesdays after Zumba with Janice!

Lunch time classes are back on the schedule as well!  This may be the perfect solution for those of you that work in the neighbourhood or that prefer to workout mid-day!

Changes to Passes & Memberships

With these changes, there will be some changes to the passes I offer.  I will be bringing back the Power Pass; which is only valid for the 30 minute classes.  If you choose to stay for 2 classes, back to back, this will count as 2 classes on this pass as the pass will be discounted.  But, for those of you on the Unlimited Membership, you can still attend as many classes as you like all month!  The Basic Membership will also be modified back to the original package and will only be eligible for 60 minute classes (or 2 – 30 minute classes).  If you prefer to stay for the additional 30 minutes on the days that 90 minute classes are offered, you can purchase an “add-on” pass and use these credits towards the additional half an hour.  This will be further discounted for all Basic Membership members.

After School Classes for Kids & Teens

I am looking forward to getting the After School Program and Classes started again soon!  Yoga, Hip Hop, Agility Training, Strength & Conditioning and much more will be offered weekdays from 4pm-5pm.  If there is a class you are interested in for your kids, but you do not see it on the schedule, please let me know!  These are speciality classes and are only added to the schedule once there is enough interest.  I am happy to offer these classes to small groups to start, so please feel free to email and let me know you are interested!  Keep an eye on the Fit Kids Club website for more information!  www.fitkidsclub.ca

This year I am taking my girls.  Yes, my little princesses are so excited to see Mohawk Warrior and Northern Nightmare!  I love it.  We still love princesses in this house, but Monster Truck seems to have found it's way into my daughters hearts as well!

Holiday Health

Most of us think about the holidays and only think about the week or two at the end of December.  The time for food, drinks and family, right?  Well, let’s be honest, those holiday gatherings (and indulgences) begin in late-November and continue through to January.  Family obligations alone can mean multiple parties with multiple extensions of your family tree.  Then there are the work parties, the friends getting together, the kids parties and the News Years celebrations… we are looking at a good 5 to 6 weekends of parties!  So, how are you possibly expected to make it through the holidays without gaining some weight???  Well, like most things in life, it is all about moderation and being realistic.  It may also mean being selfish and taking a couple hours a week for YOU!  I know, it seems crazy that you would actually be able to take care of YOURSELF over the holidays!

BE FLEXIBLE AND REALISTIC
With all the family and social obligations this time of year, it can be hard to stick to your usual workout routine.  This is where proper planning and being realistic comes into play.  If you normally workout on a Saturday morning and you see you have a Friday evening party, it would make sense to leave the party early enough that you will be rested and ready for your workout the next morning… or, the more realistic plan for most of us is to re-schedule the Saturday morning workout ahead of time.  DO NOT CANCEL IT… RESCHEDULE IT!  Find another class that will work for you, reschedule with your personal trainer or schedule time to do your workout later in the day on your own.  Do what works for you and your schedule, but just make sure you do it!

SCHEDULE YOUR WORKOUTS AS YOU WOULD ANY OTHER OBLIGATION
You take the time to schedule your parties and obligations, so why would you not schedule your workouts?  I tell all my clients to plan their workouts for the upcoming week, in advance.  It is great to say you are going to attend 3 classes in a week; the trick is actually doing it.  Every Sunday, sit down with your schedule and figure out where you can fit in your workouts.  We all know that it gets tougher to fit in a workout during the holidays, but it does not mean you have to give up.  If there is a week that you can only fit in 1 or 2 workouts at the gym or fitness studio, schedule a 20 minute home workout.  Less of a workout is still better than no workout!  Put your schedule in writing for you (and everyone else in your household) to see.  Make sure it is known that you will not be available for those times in order to ensure that no one books another social outing at the same time that could ruin your plans for a workout.  Time management is a must over the holidays.  Each evening, take a look at your schedule for the next day.  Make sure you are prepared (mentally and physically) for any workout you have planned.  If you are going to a class on your lunch hour or your way home from work, pack your workout clothes and shoes before you go to bed.

PLAN SHORTER WORKOUTS THAN USUAL
If it is getting stressful trying to fit in all your workouts plan shorter workouts.  Again, a shorter workout is better than no workout.  A lot can be accomplished in 30 minutes, if you know what to do.  H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training), is a great way to burn the maximum calories in a shorter amount of time.  Attend a 30 minute class at a local fitness studio, sign up for 30 minute sessions with a local personal trainer or find a 30 minute workout you can do at home, on your own… or, even better, with your family!  If you feel that you have no time or energy, try a 10 minute workout… you may find that you keep going for 20-30 minutes and you do have the energy.

KEEP AN EXERCISE JOURNAL
We have all heard the advice to keep a food journal when you are trying to lose weight.  Seeing what you eat on paper, right in front of you, can be a real wake up call for most of us.  All of a sudden, you can see how many cookies, lattes or “quick snacks” we have… and how it all adds up quickly!  Well, why not keep an exercise journal?  Better yet, keep that exercise journal on the fridge or bulletin board where everyone can see it?  Not only is this a great motivator for you to keep up with your work outs , but it may even motivate the rest of your family to keep up with you!

DO NOT STRESS OUT ABOUT MISSED WORKOUTS
Taking in all the advice above, the most important thing to remember, is to not stress out about missed workouts.  Life will happen and you will have to miss a workout here or there.  Although exercise is an important part of being healthy, your mental health is just as important.  Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and it will help you sleep better at night... but, stressing out about not making it to your workout that day is not going to help anything. Accept that you are human and that you can only do your best to be everywhere at once.  (This is also true when you over-book yourself for holiday parties… sometimes, you will just have to miss a party and not feel guilty about it).

QUICK TIPS TO AVOID HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN…
  • CHEW YOUR FOOD SLOWLY – PUT YOUR FORK DOWN BETWEEN BITES.
  • DRINK LOTS OF WATER.
  • DO NOT WASTE CALORIES ON ALCOHOL (EACH DRINK CONTAINS 150-200 CALORIES).
  • EAT PROPERLY THROUGH THE DAY – DO NOT “SAVE CALORIES”FOR A PARTY – THIS WILL LEAD TO POOR NUTRITIONAL CHOICES AND OVER-INDULGING AT THE PARTY.  MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES ALL DAY AND BE REASONABLE WITH YOUR CHOICES AT THE PARTY.
  • DO NOT EAT STANDING AT THE BUFFET – PUT FOOD ON A PLATE, GO AND SIT DOWN TO EAT.  EASIER TO PROPERLY CONTROL YOUR PORTIONS AND MAKE BETTER CHOICES.
  • FILL UP ON HEALTHY CHOICES BEFORE SAMPLING SOME OF THE TASTIER TREATS.
  • WHEN RUNNING ERRANDS, PACK HEALTHY AND EASY SNACKS AND AVOID TRIPS TO THE MALL FOOD COURT OR DRIVE THRU.
  • PARK FURTHER AWAY FROM THE MALL ENTRANCE OR PARTY – EVERY CALORIE BURNED WILL HELP!
  • WALK THROUGH THE NEIGHBOURHOOD TO SEE HOLIDAY LIGHTS AND DISPLAYS.
  • GO ICE SKATING, TOBOGGANING, SKIING, SNOWBOARDING… SO MANY FUN WINTER SPORTS TO CHOOSE FROM!

EXAMPLE OF GREAT 10 MINUTE WORK OUT
This great workout can be done at home or on vacation with no equipment!  Burn tons of calories and build muscle with this high-intensity circuit style workout that will only take 10 minutes! Remember to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program and most importantly… listen to your body!  All you need for this workout is a stop watch or timer… or even a clock with a second hand on it.  Be sure to warm-up properly before the workout.  Throughout the workout, your heart rate should be elevated.  If you can carry on a comfortable conversation… push yourself a little harder.  You should feel out of breath, but still be able to talk.

Complete each exercise for 30 seconds, rest for 30 seconds and repeat…

1. Jumping Jacks
  • Jumping Jacks are a great way to elevate your heart rate and get the blood pumping through your entire body.

2. Knee High Jogs
  • Keep your knees high and push yourself for the full 30 seconds!

3. Squats
  • Sit down and back (like you are going to sit into a chair).  Keep all your weight on your heels to protect your knees and aim to get your thighs parallel to the floor.  Do as many reps as you can in 30 seconds.

4. Alternating Forward Lunges
  • Step forward into a lunge.  Make sure you step far enough forward that you can keep most of the weight on the heel of your front foot and that your knee does not go further forward than your foot.  Relax your back leg enough that your heel comes off the floor and your knee is as close to the floor as possible.  Push back up from your front foot to bring your feet back together and repeat on the other side.  Do as many reps as you can in 30 seconds.

5. Push-Ups
  • Start your push-ups on your toes.  Your goal is to do the full 30 seconds on your toes, but if your form is suffering (hips raising, arms no longer bending to 90 degrees), drop down to your knees and continue your push-ups, in proper form,  for the full 30 seconds.

6. Triceps Dips (on sturdy coffee table or chair)
  • Place your hands on the edge of the table or chair (or whatever stable surface you have chosen) and place your legs straight out in front of you.  Allow your arms to bend, while dropping your hips towards the floor.  Do as many as you can with straight legs for 30 seconds.  If you cannot continue with straight legs, bring your feet closer to you and bend your knees.  Continue for the full 30 seconds.

7. Military Twists
  • In a seated position, bend your legs so your feet are flat on the floor.  Hold your hands together in front of your chest and hold your elbows high to the side.  Lean back about 45 degrees and hold this position.  For 30 seconds, twist your torso reach your elbow back for the floor behind you… alternating sides.

8. Reverse Crunches
  • Lying back on the floor, raise your legs straight up towards the ceiling.  Lift your hips off the floor slowly and slowly lower them back down.  DO NOT USE MOMENTUM.  This will be a small movement, but will target the lower abs.  Continue for the full 30 seconds.

9. High Low Plank
  • Start in a plank position, up on your hands.  Make sure your hips are in line with your body, your shoulders are down and your core is supported.  Lower down to your right elbow and then to your left, press back up to your right hand and then left.  Ensure that your hips stay in line with your body and you maintain strong support through your core.  Repeat, starting on your left.  Continue as many reps as you can in 30 seconds.

10. Rest for 30 seconds and repeat.

After you have repeated this circuit twice, take some time to cool down and stretch.  Make sure to stretch each of the major muscle groups and let your heart rate return to normal.

Disney on Ice - Worlds of Fantasy

photo
It is that time of year again... and my girls know it!  They have already started asking about Disney on Ice.  When my husband and I were talking going to see his family on Boxing Day, my oldest, very quickly, blurt out, "What about Disney on Ice?"  We have had a family tradition of going to see Disney on Ice on Boxing Day for a few years now and we all look forward to it.  We have been taking the girls to the Disney shows for 3 years now and I can not believe we are not sick of them yet! Each show is so different and so magical. The girls can not get enough of them and I actually find myself getting excited as well.  The show is always amazing, but the looks on my girls faces is what tops it off for me.  These are memories that are going to last them a lifetime.

photoThis Christmas season, Disney on Ice is bringing Worlds of Fantasy to Toronto.  "Come experience a magical Disney fantasy on ice! Rev up for non-stop fun with four of your favourite Disney stories at Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy. Pre-Natal Fitness Classes in the Beaches!

Ever since I started Beaches Fitness in my basement, I have wanted to offer pre-natal fitness classes in the Beaches.  There is not much out there being offered and the ones that are there, have not been getting great reviews from my clients.  The problem has always been that I am not set up in a proper studio with the proper equipment... but that has all changed now!  I have recently moved my studio in to a real home!  Along with my parents, my husband and I have spent the past 2 months renovating a new studio in the Kingston Road Village... right on the border of the Beaches and Upper Beaches!  I am loving the new home of Beaches Fitness and I can finally offer all the classes I have been dying to offer for years now!
I have hired a wonderful Pre-Natal Yoga instructor.  She came to me highly recommended by my clients as well as by family.  She has a son of her own and is a great addition to the Beaches Fitness family!
The classes will be offered in 6-week pre-registered packages.  The class sizes will be kept small, so you can be sure you will be getting a safe and effective workout throughout your pregnancy.
Pre-Natal Yoga
Prenatal Yoga is a class designed to encourage flexibility and relaxation, build strength and endurance, increase breath awareness and control and generally prepare the bodies and minds of moms-to-be.
Each class involves mindful meditation, deep hip opening work, and some gentle flow to keep the body limber and free from tension. The sessions are led by Lisa Veronese, a certified prenatal yoga instructor and mom, who brings a variety of techniques and methods with her to help you have a healthy and active pregnancy and prepare for labor and delivery effectively.
*No previous yoga experience is necessary; women at all stages of pregnancy are welcome. **Please bring your own yoga mat and two bath towels to assist as props.
Pre-Natal Conditioning
A pre-natal group fitness class for expectant mothers. This class is a full-body work out modified to meet the needs of women going through each stage of their pregnancy. The focus of this class is to encourage health and fitness throughout the pregnancy as well as prepare for birth and the months to follow.
If you have any questions or would like to register for the next 6-week program for either the Pre-Natal Yoga or Pre-Natal Conditioning classes, email me at Info@beachesfitness.ca

White vs. Whole Wheat Flour

I found an article on Naturegem.com. I was looking for more information on white flour and white sugar. I know whole wheat is better, I have baked with it for years. I know my sugar cookies have a slightly different texture than most, but besides that, most people can not even tell that I use the whole wheat flour. I actually prefer the difference. But, I have always wondered why people are so set on using white flour. What is the reason?

My first search took me to http://www.angelfire.com/folk/naturalife/whiteflr.html . Here is the beginning of the article...

In the manufacture of white flour, manufactures first remove the wheat seed's bran, its six outer layers, and the germ (or embryo) which contains 76% of the vitamins and minerals. 97% of the dietary fiber is also lost.

Then it gets worse. What little is left is then bleaches, preserved and aged with chlorine dioxide. It is further whitened by adding chalk, alum, and ammonium carbonate to make it look and feel more improved and appealing to the consumer. An anti-salting agent called sorbitan mono-saturate is added in the the final stage.

A few synthetic nutrients are then added back into the white flour and it is then called “enriched” In actuality, there has been no real “enrichment” of the original product, but deception and destruction of the life-giving properties of one of the many perfect creations we find in nature.”

You should also check out http://www.healthy-eating-politics.com/white-flour.html for more information.

So, if this is true, then why would I ever allow white flour back in my house? I clean with vinegar and baking soda, I use phosphate and chlorine free dish soap, I use all natural deodorant... why would I bake with white flour and allow my children to ingest a bunch of chemicals and not reap any of the benefits that are found in the grains natural state?

But, is whole wheat flour perfect? Well, no. Whole wheat flour is better than white flour, but it could be even better if it were whole grain. Here is what I found on the Health Canada website (http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/nutrition/whole-grain-entiers-eng.php)...

Is whole wheat flour whole grain?
In Canada, when wheat is milled to make flour, the parts of the grain are usually separated and then are recombined to make specific types of flour, such as whole wheat, whole grain, white cake and pastry flour, and all purpose white flour. If all parts of the kernel are used in the same relative proportions as they exist in the original kernel, then the flour is considered whole grain.
Under the Food and Drug Regulations, up to 5% of the kernel can be removed to help reduce rancidity and prolong the shelf life of whole wheat flour. The portion of the kernel that is removed for this purpose contains much of the germ and some of the bran. If this portion of the kernel has been removed, the flour would no longer be considered whole grain.

Is my 100% whole wheat bread whole grain?

Whole wheat bread is made with whole wheat flour. As sold in Canada, whole wheat flour may have much of the germ removed. Therefore, 100% whole wheat bread may not be whole grain - however, it remains a nutritious choice that provides dietary fibre not found in white bread.

How do I know if a product is made with whole grains?

Look for the word "whole grain" on the label and in the ingredient list. Many foods containing whole grains will have the words "whole grain" followed by the name of the grain as one of the first ingredients. Products labelled with the words "multigrain," and "organic" are not necessarily whole grain - the flour or grains in the products may be made with or consist of little or no whole grains.”

So, what are we to do? Buy Whole GRAIN as much as possible. Avoid white bread and pasta's as much as possible. Read labels and be aware of what you are putting in your body. When you have food choices, just take a moment and read the labels. Take some time to learn about what you are putting in your body.

When I go up to the cottage, one of the things I look forward to the most is my moms peanut butter... you know, the crap that is filled with icing sugar. We only buy the all-natural peanut butter. I have learned to like it, but there is just something about spreading that creamy, sugary, yummy crap on a piece of toast... for a treat. What I am trying to say is, treats are ok, having refined sugar or white flour every once and a while is ok... but if you have a choice and you are the one baking, why not use whole wheat flour? I have been baking with it for years now and I have managed to tweak my recipes and make it work. In most recipes, you can not even tell the difference anymore.

Next, I will be looking into the brown vs. white sugar thing... stay tuned!

Diastasis Recti – What Is It and How To Correct It?

Diastasis Recti is also known as abdominal separation and is most common in postpartum women and newborn infants. I am really only going to get into the postpartum women for today. The two sides of the rectus abdominis muscle are normally attached down the middle at the linea alba... the midline of the body. During pregnancy, due to the stretching of the abdominal muscles from the growing uterus, these muscles can become separated. Some women have such a small split, they can go through life not even knowing it has happened to them. Others, like myself, can end up with a split going from the xiphoid process (bottom of your sternum) to the belly button. This may be gross for some of you... but, I was able to stick my hand through my stomach muscles after the birth of my second little girl. No fun. I also ended up with two hernia's. So, until these hernia's were corrected by surgery (I highly recommend the Shouldice Clinic in Toronto... but, that could be a whole other post), I could not even correct the split. I had to make sure I did not strangulate the hernia's. Once these corrected, I was able to begin the rehab for my abdominals. Although the two sides will never re-attach, you can train the muscles back to be side by side again.

So, how do you know if you have split your abdominal muscles? Start by laying on your back with your knees bent. Place four fingers of one hand above your belly button and the other hand below your belly button. Raise your head and shoulders off the floor and feel to see if there is a separation of the rectus abdominis muscle. Is there a gap or bulge? Is it above or below your belly button? Lower your head and shoulders back down to the floor and start the next part of the test... if there was a separation. Stay on your back with your knees bent, place four fingers of one hand across the separation, pointing down towards your feet. Raise your head and shoulder off the ground. How many fingers can you fit in the separation? Being able to place one or two fingers in the gap is normal, any more than that, you have diastasis recti.

So, now what? It may seem like it is impossible to correct this split and at times, you will get discouraged. That is natural with any kind of rehabilitation. Here are just a few things you need to know...

What to avoid...
Crunches... that's right, DO NOT do crunches to correct an abdominal split. This will force the muscles out to the side and train the muscles incorrectly.
Sit-ups
Anything that jack-knifes the body – v-sit, straight leg lifts, some pilates, etc.
Getting straight up from a laying position – turn onto your side and push up from there.
Laying on your back over a Stability Ball.
Yoga poses that stretch the abs – up-dog, cow pose, ect.
Core exercises that require you to lift your head off the ground – modify these to keep your head down
Anything that causes your abdominal wall to bulge out.
Lifting / carrying heavy objects.

What to do...
Example Exercise for the Transverse Abdominis
Tummy Vacuum – there are many different versions of the tummy vacuum. This can be done on your hands and knees, with a ball behind your back, while standing and brushing your teeth, etc.
Table Top Single Leg Lowers – just be sure to hold your belly button in your spine. Do not let your lower back and abdominals release.
Leg Slides – begin with feet on floor, then work up to lifting them 2”-3” off
Side Plank
Side Plank Raises
Crunches with Stability Ball or Bender Ball ***depending on the stage of your rehabilitation***
Table Top
Reverse Crunches
Plank ***depending on the stage of your rehabilitation***

With all of the above mentioned exercises, it is EXTREMELY important that you are constantly aware of your abdominal wall and you make sure that you are pulling your belly button up and back, into your spine. This will ensure that you are actively engaging your Transverse Abdominal muscles and that you are on your way to a speedy rehab.

There is some question out there as to whether plank is safe to do with Diastasis Recti or not. All the research I have done comes down to this... as long as you are doing plank properly, yes, plank is safe. I personally did plank daily as part of my abdominal rehabilitation and it worked! That being said, you should make sure to properly support your stomach and really think of pulling your belly button up into your spine. This ensures that you are engaging the Transverse Abdominis. Plank will actively engage all the muscles of your midsection, including the rectus abdominis, external & internal obliques, transverse abdominals as well as the lower back... not to mention the glutes, lats, delts and pecs! This exercise truly a full body workout and I highly recommend it be added to all programs... again, as long as it is done properly. This is where a trained professional becomes necessary. Certified Personal Trainers are able to help you maintain proper posture and ensure safety throughout your workout. When dealing with Diastasis Recti, make sure you find a trainer that has the experience dealing with this specific problem. Not all Pre and Post Natal Specialists have dealt with Diastasis Recti and without the knowledge and experience necessary, they could cause more damage to the abdominals.

I am constantly researching Diastasis Recti and Postpartum Fitness. At this time, I am actively researching the affect of plank and diastasis recti. If I do find any strong evidence that plank should not be done while correcting an abdominal split, I will add a new post right away. The world research on postpartum fitness is still so new. Recommendations are changing constantly. It is important that you find a trainer that can work with you and is actively up to date on all things related to postpartum fitness. It is too easy to get certified and then just fall behind the times. If you are thinking about getting a personal trainer, meet with them first. Talk to them and see how you feel at the end of the meeting. Go with your gut and make sure they are properly qualified. This can be a whole other post... maybe it will be one day!
